As long-range strikes go Georgios Tzavellas' goal against Schalke at the weekend takes some beating, with the Frankfurt left-back scoring from deep inside his own half.
Frankfurt lost the game 2-1 after a first-half goal from Jose Manuel Jurado and Angelos Charisteas cancelled out Tzavellas’ equalising second-half strike. Tzavellas goal will undoubtedly go down as one of the most memorable of the season though after Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer completely misread the long punt up field by the left-back. Neuer has continually been linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer as manager Sir Alex Ferguson looks for a replacement for the retiring Edwin van der Sar. The Germany international will therefore be hoping Ferguson wasn’t watching the match the game on Saturday when he was made to look more than a little foolish when he came totally missed Tzavellas’ long-range pass, assuming Theofanis Gekas was going to latch onto the ball. Unfortunately for Neuer, he didn’t and the ball bounced between the goalkeeper, the striker and a Schalke defender to bounce into the net. Neuer’s blushes were saved though when Charisteas won the game for Schalke, taking his side to tenth in the Bundesliga, with Frankfurt 15th.
