GET THIS! HOIST FOR HAITI

Hoisting for Haiti – Fermoy’s Response

This coming Valentines weekend (February 12th-14th) the town of Fermoy and its surrounding area will witness a unique and challenging charity event in the centre of the town. On the Friday evening local man Conor O’Kane, who travelled as a volunteer to Haiti in October last year, will be hoisted over the town’s square. Housed in a purposely-built Perspex box Conor will fast and remain hoisted for close to 48 hours before coming back down to earth (literally) on Sunday afternoon. Reflecting on his brief trip to Haiti, Conor explained that “it was a truly life changing experience” and he “was particularly touched by the friendliness and pride of the local Haitians despite the unbelievable poverty they lived in”. Furthermore, he added that “what was most disturbing was the fact that the people had so little before the earthquake, it is hard to understand where they will get the will or resources to begin the recovery”. All proceeds from the event will go to the Haven Partnership Foundation. Haven, who Conor travelled with in October, are presently involved in the earthquake emergency relief project. However, after meeting with the Haitian president Rene Preval recently, Haven founder Leslie Buckley crucially announced that “Haven will construct up to 10,000 houses in the rebuilding of Haiti. With more than 1.5 million people estimated to be now homeless, the people of Haiti will need our assistance in providing permanent shelter more than ever”.
The intention of the “Hoisting for Haiti” project is to send local skilled tradesmen on the October 2010 house-building mission with Conor commenting “it costs €4000 to send a tradesman to Haiti, we hope to raise sufficient funds to send five local people in October, thus beginning what I hope will be lasting relationship between the townland of Fermoy and the people of Haiti”.

Irish Heart Foundation Marathon Challenge 2010

What is the Marathon Challenge all about?
Well, it basically came about late last year when myself and my brother were having a conversation about running a marathon. I went to Pat Reynolds at K2ny, a personal trainer, and suggested that we would like him to do up a training plan for a marathon. Also we were willing to find other volunteers to join us and raise money for the Irish Heart Foundation. So, we ended up with 5 volunteers - myself (Brian Murphy), Shane Murphy, Avril Vickery, Jennifer Prout and Joanne O Donovan. Pat then suggested that we set ourselves a real challenge and do a number of marathons throughout the year. We are now set to run over 100 miles for our charity. It all begins in Graughwell, Galway with a 10 mile road race on March 14. Then we go to Bantry on May 2nd for the Bantry Bay Run, which is a half marathon (13.1 miles). Then comes the first of our full marathons in Cork on June 7. Next stop is Dingle on Ssptember 4 for another 26.2 miles. We then hope to travel to New York in November to compete inthe marathon there. This totals 101.7 miles. All this is in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation and we will be holding a number of fundraising events over the year, so stay tuned..

VIRAL VIDEO OF THE DAY - REJECTED GAY SUPERBOWL AD

TV Buzz A commercial for Mancrunch, a new gay dating website, will not be aired during the Superbowl, which would be less weird if CBS hadn't given the OK to a pro-life commercial featuring Tim Tebow. To be fair, babies are cute. Two dudes kissing? Not so much, says CBS.
