Favre was filmed chanting the lyrics with teammates after leading his side to a 34-3 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. The quarterback's impromptu rendition cements the song's entry into US popular consciousness just days after it was first performed by General Larry Platt in an audition for the television talent show American Idol. Platt, a 62-year-old veteran of the civil rights movement, wrote the song to protest against the fashion for young African-Americans to wear low-strung trousers. His energetic performance left the judging panel including Simon Cowell in stitches and has already sparked a host of remixes, mash-ups and tributes. Jimmy Fallon, the late night NBC talk show host, even covered Pants On The Ground in the style of rocker Neil Young on Thursday night. Platt hopes to release his composition as a single and already is being tipped as the next Susan Boyle, the 48-year-old Scottish woman catapulted to transatlantic fame by her performance on Britain's Got Talent. Some commentators in the US have remarked on the irony of a song lamenting the arrogance of youth enjoying popularity in the swaggering world of the American football locker room. Favre is widely considered one of the finest footballers of his generation, leading the Green Bay Packers to two Super Bowl appearances in the 1990s. But his perceived selfishness has alienated many fans.
